The Benefits of Lean Manufacturing

I recently read an article in The New Yorker discussing how American manufacturers are not as worried about Chinese manufacturers buying up US companies as they were when Japanese companies went on a buying spree in the 80/90's.

This is due to the benefits of Lean Manufacturing.  In the case of the Japanese manufacturers, they brought to the US the advanced manufacturing techniques of Lean which US manufacturers mostly lacked at that time.

In the case of the Chinese, the don't use Lean Manufacturing as heavily and since the Japanese buying sprees the US manufacturers have taught themselves the manufacturing technique.  

Lean manufacturing is a great way to insulate yourself against your competition.  Theory of Constraints is another manufacturing technique to help your company.
